You can have a winter garden

Even though you are starting to get the first frost of the year on your garden or it's been completely covered by 2 feet of snow, it's still possible to enjoy the year round ambiance of a garden even during the harshest of winters. A wooden planter box like this one makes for a great gardening area for herbs or small vegetable plants. Make sure you line it with plastic so the water doesn't damage your counter or the wooden planter.

Planter boxes are great gardening tools

One of the first ideas that come to mind is create your own indoor garden by building or purchasing a planter box to set in a window. Many home improvement stores sell these year round and there are even some that are specifically made for indoor use. Plastic works best however a wooden one with a liner can accomplish the same with a bit more décor value. You can plant many types of herbs, vegetables and some fruits that are not too large. Just imaging cooking and you can just reach over and pluck off some thyme for your lemon chicken recipe. Manage your planter like you would a garden and you can enjoy the harvest for months when the weather outside is bone chilling cold.

To give your indoor garden a touch of the outdoors bring some of your garden décor inside during the winter months. Hang some wind chimes over it or place a butterfly stake in the dirt. This will give your indoor garden a feel of summer warming your heart through the cold winter months. You can even place a small indoor fountain next to it giving you an oasis with the sound of soft trickling water to relax with.

Tomatoes grown in the winter indoors can yield some great fruits and vegetables like these tomatoes. It will keep you from having to run to the store and back in those frigid temperatures outside.

Hydroponics for the serious gardener

For the more serious gardener you could use a hydroponics system. Hydroponic systems are more expensive but will give you the most out of your harvest. These systems require nutrient enriched flowing water throughout the system to grow your garden. Even thought they are not as stylish you can still decorate with your garden décor to bring the outdoors inside. Hydroponics is not the first choice for many indoor gardeners for the reason of complexity and expense however it is an option for some. There are many different styles and sizes to fit every budget, so check out some of the options before you make your final decision and you'll be much happier with the outcome.

If you don't have a lot of space, then a verticle style hydroponic unit will work better. Like this mini hydroponic farm shown in the picture, you can grow almost anything.
